I had been looking for my first Royal Oak, I so wanted the Chrono white dial, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. A very good friend of mine who is also an AP dealer in Latin America had an Off Shore full bracelet, silver dial. I was very stubborn, I wanted the Chrono. One day he said to me: “Come to my house, if you like it keep it and if and when I get the Chrono, I’ll give you the option to swap it and I’ll give you back the difference in price” He took off some links from the bracelet as -I have a thin wrist- all I had to do was put it on, deal was made right then and there. |
Impressions |
| |
As I came home with the watch I could not take my eyes off it, the finishing was like nothing I had ever seen. Owning Rolexes Breitlings’ Cartiers’and Bvlgaris’ I knew this was so much higher in the food chain, I could not go to sleep, I would look at it from every angle, the dial was perfect, the octagon with its screws, hypnotizing. I was a little guilty about the price, but that soon wore off. It was like a desensitizing process, I had become a nut, the watch budget became top priority. |
Day-to-Day |
| |
The watch is a little big and heavy, I found myself banging and scratching it for the first few months, but, a learning curve it was; once you get used to the half pound on your wrist (250g) you become “watch aware” I took it to AP and they buffed it perfect. It has not a ding since then. I find myself wearing it a lot, it is a lot of watch, masculine and impressive, no one can resist a peek, and when it’s on me, I constantly see people’s eyes coming back to it, like the octagon is some sort of homing device, a magnet, they just can’t help it. It looks amazing with Jeans, bathing suit, birthday suit, and maybe even a little dressy. It is however to big for wearing with a suit. I would recommend and concur with Dario on his review of the Jumbo, maybe even the Chrono, as it is thinner and fits under the sleeve. |
Accuracy |
| |
This watch is not one of the most precise movements in the planet, it is however a precise and beautiful movement from what I’ve read, “In house” from AP. Sublimely finished and to my knowledge, “Dead on Balls Accurate” I checked it with the Colorado Atomic Clock and it was +/- 2 or 3 seconds in a couple of days while on my wrist. I find the Chronograph on the Off Shore to be more useful as you don’t have to unscrew the buttons. I don’t especially time a lot of events, mainly flights, but it is nice to know you have it, I actually leave the chrono running to see the big center second hand moving as it is a fluid and accurate to1/8 second. In case the world ended and all I had was my Off Shore, I could time how much it would take to cook a chicken on the fire. |
Verdict |
| |
I would give this watch a 9, only because versatility is compromised by size. It is however a power trip, the solidness of the bracelet, the astonishing form, the meticulous finish and the weight, yes, the weight, make it a watch that once worn, shuns all the rest. It is my favorite watch to wear right now and very few watches in the market could debunk it. |
